Professor Aubrey Soskolne was born in South Africa in 1941. He grew up in a small town near Johannesburg were he went to school and later went on to complete his dental training at the University of the Witwatesrand, South Africa. He then went to London in 1967 and over the next 5 years completed a Ph.D. at the University of London where he also obtained his Periodontal and Oral Pathology training.He joined and worked in the Dept. of Pathology of the Hebrew University – Hadassah faculty of Dental Medicine between the years 1972 and 1980. In 1980 he transfered to the department of Periodontology were he served as the Chairman of the Department of Periodontics from 1980 till 2007. Prof. Soskolne has published well over 100 articles in scientific journals, chapters in books and has lectured in Israel and abroad on a wide variety of clinical periodontal subjects as well as on basic research topics. He has supervised tens of students for their masters and PhD thesis. The periodontal speciality program which he set up at Hadassah and led in its formative years was the first program in Israel. Its first graduate successfully passed the board exam in 1985 (Prof Ayala Stabholz). She and many of its other graduates have gone on to fill key positions in dental education and periodontal therapy in Israel and abroad. The department under his leadership also became the first dept outside the European community to have its program recognized by the European Federation of Periodontology.
Prof. Soskolne has served on multiple academic and clinical committees both in Israel as well as in Europe and the United States and has served as chairman on many. He has also been the recipient of numerous prestigious prizes including the Basic Research in Periodontal Disease Award (2004) of the International Association for Dental Research and second place in the Kaye Innovations Award of the Hebrew University in 2002 together with his co-workers for their work in the development of the Perio Chip. Since his retirement from Hadassah in 2008 Prof Soskolne continues his private practice limited to periodontics in Herzlia and Jerusalem and Paints in his own Studio in Jerusalem.
